Practical tips

Proper validation makes all the difference

Selecting an antibody doesn’t end with a click on “Order.” Even high-quality antibodies will only deliver reliable results if they have been sufficiently validated for the desired application and species.

What should you look for?

1. Check for application-specific validation
An antibody validated for Western blot does not automatically work in immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF), or flow cytometry. Make sure the desired application is explicitly listed in the manufacturer’s data.

2. Consider species compatibility
Verify that the antibody has been tested on your target species. Results from mouse samples cannot always be directly extrapolated to human or other samples.

3. Use control samples
Positive and negative controls help identify nonspecific signals or background staining early on and ensure reliable interpretation of your results.

4. Use independent data
Publications, citation counts, and user-generated data often provide valuable insights into an antibody’s actual performance in everyday laboratory use.
