When is it time to replace the microplate reader or washer?

Microplate readers, washers and dispensers are indispensable in many research and diagnostics laboratories - from ELISA assays to high-throughput screening. However, as with any technology, even the most reliable system will eventually reach the end of its supported lifecycle.

If you are experiencing inefficiencies or your model is on an End of Service (EOS) list, it may be time to check whether your device is still meeting the needs of your laboratory.

When should you consider an upgrade?

1. Unreliable or inconsistent results

Your device should provide reproducible, reliable data every time. If you notice variability in absorbance, fluorescence or luminescence measurements - or inconsistent wash performance - worn optics, aging components or calibration drift may be the cause. This affects the accuracy of your assays and can have a negative impact on all downstream results.

2. Increasing maintenance costs and limited availability of spare parts

Agilent (formerly BioTek) supports instruments for 7 years after purchase, with an additional 3 years of spare parts availability. After that, it can become difficult or impossible to source critical components such as lamps, tubing or seals. More frequent maintenance and parts replacement not only increases costs, but also leads to unwanted downtime.

3. Restrictions in the workflow

Older models are often not compatible with newer plate formats, software solutions or updated protocols. If you use workarounds or require additional equipment to complete an assay, your system may no longer be an optimal fit for your lab's needs.

4. Outdated software and limited connectivity

In modern labs, smooth data transfer to LIMS, cloud storage and analysis tools is crucial. If your device's software feels outdated or data export is cumbersome, you're losing valuable time - and opportunities for more efficient collaboration.

Which devices are currently affected by EOS? (as of August 2025)

Agilent (formerly BioTek) has announced the end of service (EOS) for the following models:

Microplate readers

  • Synergy2

  • SynergyH4

  • PowerWave series

Washer and Dispenser

  • Elx405 - all models except deep well washer

  • Elx50 - all models

  • MicroFill - all models except "AF1000A" (USA only)

  • MicroFlo Select - all models

  • MultiFlo - all models

  • MultiFlo FX - Gen 1 models: MFX, MFXP, MFXPR, MFXPW, MFXR, MRFW

Why act now?

A timely upgrade can help:

  • Avoid unexpected downtime

  • Ensure data integrity and assay performance

  • Continue to receive technical support and compatible consumables

  • Equip your lab for future methods and applications

Not sure if your device is affected?

Even if your device is still working, it may already be approaching the end of its supported life.
We will be happy to check the service status of your model for you and recommend suitable replacement devices that best suit your workflows.
